Jordan - 3 Title seqeunces

Vertigo

The title seqeunce is introduced by the eery, mysterious soundtrack which is fairly subtle to begin with apart from the sudden, slightly louder noise which kicks in just as the Paramount logo comes up. This slightly disturbing music continues throughout the title seqeunce and helps create questions as the ECU of the womans face is shot so it is therefore unknown who this person is as her whole face cannot be seen. The sudden music at the beggining of the title seqeunce makes the titles stand out as the sound contrasts to the eery soundtrack that is played throughout.

The shots of the persons face creates a good base for the titles to be put on to and also adds a mysterious mood to the title seqeunce because of the fact that it could be anyone. The titles that are shown on the persons face are fairly big and stand out to the audience because of the outline of the letters only being shown rather than the letters being filled in with colour. The ECU of the persons eye is also very affective as when it zooms in the screen changes so that it has a red tint just as the title 'Vertigo' comes out of the eye towards the screen. The red makes the title stand out more because it makes the white title contrast to the red background of the eye. There is then a spinning pattern that comes out of the eye which creates a dark mood and could suggest hypnotism. A series of different coloured spinning patterns is then shown as various titles appear at the side of the screen. The spinning patterns aswell as the use of sound contributes to this hypnotic mood which continues throughout the seqeunce as soon as the ECU of the persons eye is shown.

Once the titles are shown one of the spinning ppatterns goes back to the eye which signals the end of the opening credits. The use of sound and editing are the most important in this films title seqeunce due to the hypnotic patterns being shown with various transactions between them. The sound goes extremely well with these patterns as it is mysterious and seems quite repetetive.

The Orphanage

The title seqeunce in The Orphanage is shown after a clip of children playing and a woman answering the phone talking about one little girl in particular. This clip will, most likely, have some relevance in the film later and sets the scene as it is fairly obvious where they are due to the title of the film. The little girl then says 'got you' which is then followed by the start of the titles. The sound then changes from the digetic sound of the girls playing to an almost silent non-digetic sound which then builds up. Throughout the titles there is a fairly calm soundtrack which is played which builds up as the seqeunce continues.

The opening titles are all shown on, what seems to be, a wallpaper background with hands which rip the wallpaper to reveal a title shown beneath with a different coloured wallpaper underneath. This is extremely inventive and works extremely well as it stands out to the audience. The two different coloured wallpapers for the titles is very effective because the top layer of wallpaper is very dark and seems to be saturated of any colour. However, the second layer of wallpaper is red which contrasts to the original, dull background. Also, there are ECU's of this background and where it has been torn which creates questions for the audience as it is unclear what this is and why its there. Furthermore, there are shots of one blank wallpaper with the shadows of a hand on it which also adds questions as the audience are asking 'who's hand is it?' The titles themselves are written in a sort of old fashioned font which goes perfectly with the use of sound and the background for the titles.

Editing is the most affective component in this title seqeunce as it is original and stands out to the audience hugely because of this. Also the way the colour has been saturated is very good for the titles as it creates contrast with the red.

Dont forget to finish the title research, you have done most of the editing on the film so far but dont forget about these. You need to add some greater use of media language and analysis. Have any of the titles you have researched had an impact on yours?
